The Medal of Gratitude was designed by Gdańsk sculptor Dobrochna Surajewska.
The obverse features the words ‘thank you’ in 43 languages (including Polish, English, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Greek, Lithuanian, Swedish, Welsh, Czech, Portuguese and Japanese). The reverse bears the inscription ‘Solidarity,’ an image of the historic Gdańsk Shipyard Gate adorned with flowers, and the Latin inscription: Hic nobis adiumento in periculis, solacio in laboribus fuit (‘Hastened to help us in danger, and gave comfort in times of hardship’).
